Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice

And the journey through fall-land continues! Today I’m writing about my color scheme and filter options. Here it is:

As I wrote about in my previous blog post, fall fashion magazines usually use a warm-toned color scheme. This is done to ‘match’ the changing colors of nature, such as the colors of falling leaves:

Because of this, I’d like to use mostly yellow, orange, purple, magenta, blue, black, and brown in my color scheme. I’d also like to include some pops of bright colors here and there to make the magazine more engaging and visually appealing. Now that the color scheme is decided, what else is there to research? The clothing and beauty items, of course! I searched up some ‘fall’ outfits and beauty products online, and as expected, they fit perfectly with my color scheme. Here are some that I really liked:

As shown by the outfit images, sweaters, pants, coats, skirts, and boots are heavily used during fall time. As for beauty, many products smell of caramel, apple pie, pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice, cinnamon, ginger, and everything in between. I don’t know about you, but these scents are giving me serious nostalgia for fall time. Why can’t it be autumn all year round? But I digress. These kinds of products are definitely ones that I would include in my magazine, especially using orange and red. I can already image the perfect red pieces and pumpkin-spice face scrub that I could include in my two-page spread.
Since it’s always sunny in Florida and there’s almost no fallen brown leaves, I’m going to have to make do with what I have. That’s where filters come in to save the day. There are several filter ‘combinations’ that can be placed on photographs to make them look more warm-toned and fall-y (I don’t think that’s a word but let’s go with it). Here are some that I found on my two holy grails, Pinterest and We Heart It:

Option #1:

Option #2:

Option #3:

Option #4:

After finding these filter ‘packs’ I knew I had to try them out for myself! As a base, I used a picture of myself that was taken a few months ago. It was important for me to use a picture that had a person in it because that’s what most of my images are going to have.

The Base:

The Base + Option #1

The Base + Option #2

The Base + Option #3

The Base + Option #4

To anyone without a keen ‘fall’ eye they would look practically the same, but since I LIVE for achieving the perfect VSCO filter, the pictures are worlds apart. So let’s talk about them. Option #1 is probably my third favorite; I really like the look of the picture but I feel like it should have more light. Option #2 is my least favorite; mainly because it completely washes out the ‘model’. Option #3 is my favorite; I like the grain and fade that was added to it but I’d like it if there was a little more saturation. Option #4 is my second favorite; I love the brighter colors but the person is a little washed out in my opinion. Ultimately I think I would do a combination of Option #3 and Option #4 for my images.
So after happily writing this fall blog post and entering my autumn fantasy, I realize that it’s not fall time. Fall is six months away….I’m gonna go cry now. So I hope your day is going better than mine!

Bye for now,
Catalina
